Even if you have a perfect oral hygiene routine at home, it is still important for you to get a professional dental cleaning at Dr. Matrullo & Associates twice a year. Using advanced equipment, a biannual professional cleaning treats built-up plaque and tartar while polishing the enamel for a healthier, brighter smile. After your appointment, you can get tips on better home oral care and discover certain areas that need extra care. A dental cleaning will give our dental practitioners a chance to identify any issues in your mouth that might need treatment. Generally offered during routine dental cleaning appointments, dental exams also help our staff to assess the teeth, gum tissues, bite position, jawbone, and further oral checkpoints for the prompt identification and care of dental conditions. Dental cleanings and exams are vital to maintaining your dental health so make an appointment at our Cranston, RI location.
How Do Dental Cleanings and Exams Work?
A professional cleaning will start by removing the tartar and plaque deposits on your teeth, which are hard to treat on your own, no matter how often you brush and floss. Professional equipment is used to carefully scale buildup without affecting the enamel. To start, an ultrasonic device addresses bigger chunks of plaque and tartar with high-speed vibrations and a lubricating mist. Then, a fine handheld instrument, such as a scaler or curette, will remove the remaining pieces. Each tooth will be treated individually to get all the tartar and plaque. Once the teeth are cleaned, your enamel will be polished to strengthen the enamel and remove stains. If requested or needed, a professional fluoride treatment may be performed after your cleaning.
Comprehensive exams at our Cranston, RI facility begin with a review of your dental history. Our team might also review any oral problems or cosmetic smile goals you have to discover more regarding your overall dental health. During certain annual check-ins, a series of advanced x-rays might be done to give a member of our team improved knowledge of the health of your enamel and oral bone structures. They may then screen for cancer of the mouth, check the alignment of your bite and temporomandibular joints, and look at your teeth for trauma, as well as the wear of any dental appliances. A gum screening could also be carried out to look for possible symptoms of periodontal disease.
Dr. Matrullo & Associates Reviews
There are no words to express the integrity and professionalism that Dr. Martrullo & Associates demonstrate everyday to their patients! First, I must say I have been a long-term patient of Dr. Martrullo for over 40 years. October 1987 was the first time that I walked in to Dr. Martrullo and associates. I was a young girl so scared that I had no idea what was going to happen to me! As I approached the reception area the welcome and reassurance that I so needed at that moment was exhibited right at the moment. I was so relieved and relaxed that I was anxious and excited to meet Dr. Martrullo! Actually this was an emergency visit I had cracked a tooth and I was pretty uncomfortable. I had recently moved to Cranston so I needed a dentist close to my home. I decided to use the Yellow Pages to find a dentist and I came across this big blue smile the logo that actually fits Dr. Martrullo and associates! There was no computer or Google at that time for me. I am so glad that I chose Dr.Martrullo & associates as my dentist! Through the years Dr. Martrullo & associates have made such a wonderful impression on me and my family! They are also patients of Dr. Martrullo. The great staff just to mention a few Tina, actually Tina is his assistant she knows me so well she relaxes me from the moment I sit in his chair I feel like she’s my extended family! Jen and Michele I wish I could find the words to tell you how wonderful they are they are so personable and professional and believe me they are always smiling! The hygienists Lynn and Claudia just to name the two that I have had are wonderful! Their cleaning techniques are incredible !! The staff as a whole will go out of their way to help you in every possible way that they can. They truly go that extra mile for patients I know because I have experienced it! I could go on an on and tell you what a wonderful practice that Dr. Martrullo & Associates is. You need to experience it for yourself! Dr. Martrullo and his staff gave me my smile back and every time I smile and receive a compliment I remember the Yellow Pages and that big blue logo with a that great smile because I have that smile now! Dr. Martrullo & associates will always be my Quan of dentistry! Helen
The staff here is super professional. From never having to wait to be seen after check in, to finding issues my previous dentist of years never addressed, to making the entire process of fillings, cleanings, etc painless and comfortable, I would recommend Dr. Matrullo to anyone.
Best dentist I've ever been to! Makes me want to keep going and not skip out on dental visits anymore. Extremely friendly people. They make you feel comfortable. I had been to a dentist in Connecticut years ago for a cleaning and it was horrible. My mouth hurt for a whole week after. I went to Dr. Matrullo & Associates and got a cleaning and I left with no pain. Wonderful dentists!

About UsDental Cleanings and Exams FAQs
Will my dentist check for more than just cavities during an exam?
Absolutely! Dental exams are about much more than just finding cavities. Your dentist may check the health of your gums, screen for oral cancer, and evaluate the overall condition of your teeth and mouth. They might also assess how well your bite aligns and look for signs of teeth grinding or other habits that could impact your oral health. These exams are a comprehensive way to monitor your overall oral well-being.
What if my teeth feel sensitive after a cleaning?
It's not unusual for teeth to feel a bit sensitive after a dental cleaning, especially if you have gum recession or areas of plaque buildup that require more attention. This sensitivity typically fades within a day or two and can often be managed with desensitizing toothpaste. If the discomfort persists or feels extreme, it's important to let your dentist know, as it could indicate an underlying issue. Remember, cleanings are designed to promote long-term health and comfort for your smile.
How do dental cleanings and exams affect my overall health?
Oral health is closely linked to overall health, so regular cleanings and exams play a vital role in maintaining your well-being. Conditions like gum disease have been connected to systemic issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and even pregnancy complications. By keeping your teeth and gums healthy, you're also reducing the risk of these broader health concerns. Think of your dental visits as an investment in your total body health.
